Beyond Talent Workshops
The cornerstone of the AE program at SoMTD is the building and discovery of student skills and aptitudes necessary for students to succeed as a musician in the 21st Century. The Beyond Talent Workshop (BTW) series will engage students serious about both their craft and their entrepreneurial ability in how to achieve career goals using techniques from within and outside their discipline.
Workshop events are designed in a continuum – each will build off the lessons learned in the last session. Students are encouraged to attend the entire program of events, and will be granted a certificate of achievement for attending the entire workshop series. Workshops are highly interactive, and students will viscerally experience the rewards of self-assessment, discovery, and working high-performing collaborative teams. Each workshop will conclude with actionable takeaways related to personal career development or student programs that tie into AE.
Theatre & Business Skills Workshop
Arts Enterprise has forged a partnership that will allow business and theatre students and faculty to learn from each other and gain the necessary skills each will need to pursue successful careers. In a reciprocal partnership, Theatre students, under the guidance of John Neville-Andrews and Sarah-Jane Gwillim, will participate in a workshop on business skills that is immediately applicable and actionable for students' careers. Topics under consideration include; branding/marketing yourself, managing the finances of a freelance career, producing your own theatre, and networking for theatre students. Ross School of Business students will choose from workshops such as; Expression for Business Presentation, and Improve Acting for Business Students.
Music 101
Breaking the "fourth wall" that often alienates would-be concertgoers from experiencing the performing arts, Music 101 deploys student artists and professional touring artists to share their music in fun and collaborative settings that encourage questioning and learning. Students receive reduced-price tickets through partners and sponsors UMS and the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra.
Enharmonia
Enharmonia creates a sense of ownership within large performing ensembles at the School of Music through increased communication and engagement on the UM campus and in the Ann Arbor community. It encourages audience members to actively participate with an enhanced, more comfortable concert experience. The program reaches out to new audience members through education and mentorship of student musicians at the high school and college levels, through new publicity techniques, and by creating a welcoming and participatory concert environment. In turn, Enharmonia fosters enthusiasm for classical music.
AEIdeas
These opportunity fellowships allow Club members to develop and launch their own programs at the University and in the community through Arts Enterprise. Students are provided mentorship, support services, and a small grant to launch programs.
Speaker Series
The Speaker Series connects students with pioneering leaders of artistic enterprise, breaking past the traditional perceived barrier between business and the arts. Speakers include leading art consultants (Melissa Dibble, EMC Arts), out-of-the-box thinking performers (Ed Sarath, Univ. of Michigan), business theorists interested in artistic constructs (Michael Jensen, Univ. of Michigan), and everything in between.
Mentorship Through Music
Mentorship Through Music's mission is to bridge collegiate and urban communities by investing in the artistic education and creativity of students in Detroit and the University of Michigan through community engagement. More specifically, UofM students participate in a weekly mentorship program with the University Prep Academy Middle School, a charter school in Detroit. Mentorship Through Music provides private instruction, mentorship, and chamber music coachings to beginning string players at UPA. The goal of this program is not only to encourage the musical growth of these young musicians, but also to foster the development of useful skills learned through the study of music that can be transferred into other aspects of their everyday lives and academic careers. This is also a great opportunity for university students to get involved in a rewarding experience in which they will learn about community engagement and have a hands on experience in Detroit.
